My age gate isn't showing

The checks that resolve this fastest, in order.

Your storefront is loading without asking anything. Work through these in order — it is almost always one of the first three.

1. Are you testing in a private window?

Do this first, because it is free and it explains a surprising number of these.

Once you have answered your own gate, your browser holds a pass and you will not be asked again. Your store looks ungated to you and is gated for everybody else. The same is true of a page your browser cached from before you set the app up.

Open your storefront in a private or incognito window, or on mobile data.

Two more places the gate deliberately does not appear, for the same reason a merchant cannot work from behind their own gate:

  • Shopify’s theme editor preview. The gate stands down in design mode.
  • An unpublished theme. The embed only runs on the theme that is live.

So test the real storefront, in a private window.

2. Did you click Save in the theme editor?

Enabling the Loman Age Verification app embed does not apply it. The theme editor’s Save button does.

  1. Online Store → Themes → Customize on your published theme.
  2. Click the App embeds icon (a jigsaw puzzle piece).
  3. Confirm Loman Age Verification is toggled on.
  4. Click Save, even if it looks like it already is.

See Enabling the app embed.

3. Is a design published, and the gate switched on?

Check the app’s Home tab. It needs both:

  • The Age Gate Status card naming a published design.
  • Show the age gate to visitors ticked.

The second is the one people forget, because finishing the setup checklist does not tick it for you. See Turning the gate on and off.

4. Is Shopify’s own password protection on?

While it is, nobody reaches your storefront at all, so the app never runs — your gate will look correct in the app’s preview and be invisible to the public.

Online Store → Preferences → Restrict store access — untick it and save. Some admins still show this as Password protection with an Enable password checkbox; it is the same setting.

If the option is grayed outShopify locks this setting for stores on a trial that has not yet selected a plan, and for stores that have been paused. It becomes editable once the store is on an active Shopify plan. It is a Shopify setting rather than one of ours, so we cannot change it for you.

5. Is that page on your allowlist?

An allowlisted path shows your normal storefront without asking anything — that is what it is for. If the gate is missing on one page and present on others, check Settings → Allowlisted URLs, and remember that an entry ending in /* covers everything beneath it.

See Allowlisting URLs.

6. Did you publish a different theme?

App embeds belong to one theme. Publishing a new theme turns the gate off until you enable the embed there and save. See I changed my Shopify theme.

7. Did you change the app proxy URL in Shopify?

Your storefront loads the gate from a specific path. If you changed that path in your Shopify admin and the app has not been told, the storefront asks for an address that no longer serves anything — and either nothing appears or your outage message does. See Changing your gate’s URL.

A different symptom: checkout is blocking people

If the gate appears but shoppers are being stopped at checkout, that is the checkout rule rather than the gate, and it usually means they never answered — a cart from before you switched the gate on, or a browser with site storage blocked. See Checkout enforcement.
